How To Get A Room At Wellness Housing

Getting a bed at Wellness Housing takes a phone call and a visit. There is no application to complete and no waiting list to join. You call 562 716 4568, you say what you are looking for, you come and walk through the house, and if it suits you move in. This page sets out the five steps in order, what you are asked for at each one, and what happens after you move in.

What You Are Asked For

What Wellness Housing asks for is the first month, the $50 registration fee, and a conversation about what you are looking for. There is no credit check and there is no security deposit. A longer walk through of that first call covers what is worth having to hand before you dial.

Why There Is No Form

There is no application to complete at Wellness Housing. Whether one of the houses suits you is settled in a conversation, not on paper, because it is not a question a form can answer well. Wellness Housing works to a consistent process for every caller. Fit is worked out on the call, house by house, with you rather than about you.

What The Tour Shows You

You walk the house before anything is agreed. You see the bedroom you would be in, the kitchen you would cook in, the bathroom and the laundry room. Ask about the room, the rules, the payment and anything else you want to know. A cleaner is on site daily for the common areas, there is a live in manager, and there is camera monitoring across the common areas and the building perimeters.

After You Move In

The room is furnished and the utilities are already on. There is no lease to sign and no fixed term, and residents stay month to month. The houses are substance free, there are no outside visitors, and residents use earbuds or headphones for devices in the shared rooms. What a room costs sets out what a bed costs and what the monthly rate covers.

Which Of The Three Houses

Wellness Housing has three houses in South Los Angeles. The house on East 54th Street is in Central Alameda. The house on West 42nd Street is in Historic South-Central, near Exposition Park and about a mile from USC. The house on East 69th Street is in Florence. Which of the three suits you is part of what the call is for.

What The Tour Of The House Shows You

The bedroom is the part people most want to see before they commit, so it is the part the tour starts with. The choice is a bunk bed or a single bed in a shared room, and you see both before you choose.

  • The bedroom you would actually be in
  • The shared kitchen and the common rooms
  • The bathrooms and the laundry room
  • The house manager, in person, before you commit

Getting To The House Without A Car

All three houses sit close to Metro bus stops and within a mile or two of Metro rail. Each house page lists its own lines, stations and distances, so you can work out the trip before the tour rather than on the day.

  • Metro bus stops within about a tenth of a mile of two of the houses
  • Metro A Line and E Line stations within about two miles
  • The Harbor Freeway I-110 close to all three addresses
  • Distances and lines listed on each house page

Moving Into A Furnished Room

There is nothing to move in beyond your own things. The bed, the drawers, the kitchen and the common rooms are furnished and the power, water and gas are already on, so the first night is a first night and not a project.

  • The first month and the $50 registration fee
  • No security deposit and no credit check
  • No lease to sign and no fixed term
  • The utilities already on in the house name

The Five Steps Into A Wellness Housing Room

1

Call 562 716 4568

Someone answers Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm Pacific. Say what you are looking for and roughly when you need it. There is no application to complete. A call and a tour are how it works.

2

Tour the house

You walk through the house before you agree to anything. You see the bedroom, the kitchen, the laundry room and the common areas.

3

Talk about how the rent is paid

Some residents pay out of pocket. Others pay through Los Angeles County. Wellness Housing accepts General Relief through DPSS, the DPSS Pilot Program and other third party rent assistance, and completes the county's housing verification forms.

4

Read the house rules

You get the rules before you arrive rather than after. Substance free house, no outside visitors, no pets, headphones in the shared rooms and a dedicated smoking section for nicotine users.

5

Move in

You pay the first month and the $50 registration fee and you move in. The room is furnished, the utilities are already on and there is no lease to sign.
